Joe Gilchrist

As the owner of the world-famous Flora-Bama Lounge, Joe Gilchrist is a Perdido legend. He’s brought two mega-events to Perdido Key – the Frank Brown International Songwriter’s Festival, which brings in over 300 songwriters from around the world and the Interstate Mullet Toss, an outrageous event that attracts more than 70,000 visitors.

Joe was born in Birmingham but spent his childhood in Pensacola in the 1950s. After graduating from Auburn University and a five-year stint teaching high school, Joe bought the Flora-Bama in April of 1978, and brought fun and live music to Perdido Key like never before.

Joe is a political activist and a founding member of the Alabama Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce and the Perdido Key Chamber. He’s kind of become the unofficial mayor of Perdido. When he’s not at the “Bama” you’ll find him in the hallowed halls of local governments fighting for civic enhancements and improvements to the quality of life for local citizens and visitors.
